ADIPEX INFORMATION COMMON NAME(S): Phentermine Hydrochloride, Ionamin
ADIPEX FAQ: Adipex-P is an appetite suppressant prescribed for short-term
use (a few weeks) as part of an overall weight reduction program also including
dieting, exercise, and counseling. The drug is meant for use only by excessively
overweight individuals who have a related condition - such as diabetes, high blood
pressure, or high cholesterol - that could potentially lead to serious medical
problems.
HOW TO USE ADIPEX: The normal dose is 1 capsule or tablet per day, taken
before breakfast or up to 2 hours after breakfast. Some people need only half
a dose each day. Others may find it more effective to take half a tablet twice
daily. This drug is not intended for use in children under 16 years of age.
ADIPEX SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects include changes in sex drive, constipation,
diarrhea, headache, high blood pressure, hives, impotence, inability to fall or
stay asleep, dizziness, dry mouth, exaggerated feelings of depression or elation,
increased heart rate, throbbing heartbeat, tremors, overstimulation, restlessness,
stomach or intestinal problems, unpleasant taste. If you notice any change in
intensity of these symptoms, be sure to contact a doctor or the nearest hospital/clinic.
ADIPEX PRECAUTIONS: Adipex can cause a rare but potentially fatal condition
called primary pulmonary hypertension. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop
such warning signs as chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting spells, or swollen
ankles. Adipex may impact on your ability to perform potentially hazardous activities.
Consequently, you should exercise caution if you have to drive a car or operate
machinery. It is possible to become psychologically dependent on Adipex. Call
your doctor if you rely on Adipex to maintain a state of well-being. If you stop
taking this medication suddenly after having taken high doses for an extended
period of time, you may find you are extremely fatigued or depressed, or that
you have trouble sleeping. Prolonged use of any appetite suppressant can cause
severe skin disorders, a pronounced inability to fall or stay asleep, irritability,
hyperactivity, and personality changes. Even if your blood pressure is only mildly
high, exercise caution taking this drug.
ADIPEX INTERACTIONS: Adipex should never be combined with the weight-loss
drug fenfluramine (Pondimin) as very dangerous side effects could result. Adipex
may also react badly with alcohol. Avoid alcoholic beverages while you are taking
Adipex-P. If Adipex-P is taken in combination with certain other drugs, the effects
of either can be increased, decreased, or altered.
It is extremely important to check with your doctor before combining this drug
with the following:
- Medications that boost serotonin levels, such as the antidepressants Luvox,
Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft
- Medications classified as MAO inhibitors, including the antidepressants Nardil
and Parnate
- Diabetes medications such as insulin and Micronase
- High blood pressure medications such as guanethidine (Ismelin)
ADDITIONAL ADIPEX NOTES: The effects of this drug during pregnancy have
not been studied adequately. If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or
are breastfeeding, consult your doctor immediately.
MISSED ADIPEX DOSE: If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose entirely;
then consume the next dose at the regularly scheduled time.
STORAGE: Store Adipex at room temperature.
