AMBIEN INFORMATION

GENERIC NAME:
Zolpidem tartrate

AMBIEN FAQ: Ambien is typically prescribed for the treatment of temporary insomnia that is caused by short-term circumstances. Ambien helps the patient to sleep and feel rested, but should not make them feel drowsy the day after taking it.

HOW TO TAKE AMBIEN: Always take Ambien as directed as per doctor or physician. Swallow the pill at bedtime with a full glass of water. The medication will quickly make you sleepy, so you should not take it too far in advance of when you would like to fall asleep. Never take more than your prescribed dosage.

AMBIEN SIDE EFFECTS: Although side effects cannot be anticipated, if any develop or change in intensity, consult your doctor as soon as possible. Some possible Ambien side effects include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, or clumsiness; muscle aches or pains; nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation; depression; vivid or abnormal dreams; or amnesia (memory loss) after a dose. Let your doctor if you experience any of these. Consult your doctor regarding any other potential but less common side effects.

AMBIEN PRECAUTIONS:
When sleep medications such as Ambien are used nightly for more than a few weeks, they may lose their effectiveness. Remember, too, it is possible to become dependent on some sleep medications if you use them for a long time or at high doses. If you have breathing problems, they may actually become worse when you use Ambien. Some people that use Ambien (especially those taking serotonin-boosting antidepressants) have experienced unusual changes in their thinking and/or behavior. Let your doctor know immediately if you notice a change. When taking Ambien, do not drink alcohol as it can increase the drug's side effects. Ambien (and other sleep medicines) may result in a unique type of memory loss. Thus, it should not be taken on an overnight airplane flight of less than 7 to 8 hours, since "traveler's amnesia" may occur. If you have liver problems, please use Ambien cautiously - it will take longer for its effects to wear off. When you first start taking Ambien, until you know whether the medication will have any "carry over" effect on you the next day, exercise extreme caution while doing anything that requires complete alertness (such as driving a car or operating machinery). Older adults, in particular, should be aware that they may be more apt to fall.

AMBIEN INTERACTIONS: If Ambien is used at the same time with certain other drugs, the effects of either drug could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to consult your doctor before combining Ambien with the following:
- The major tranquilizer, chlorpromazine (Thorazine)
- The antidepressant drug, imipramine (Tofranil)
- Serotonin-boosting antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil, and Zoloft
- Drugs that depress the central nervous system, including Percocet, Valium, and Benadryl.

AMBIEN NOTES:
If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, let your doctor know immediately. Babies whose mothers take some sedative/hypnotic drugs may be born with withdrawal symptoms and may seem limp and flaccid. Ambien is not recommended for use by nursing mothers.

MISSED AMBIEN DOSE: Do not double dose on Ambien. If you accidentally miss a dose, skip it and continue with your regular schedule.

STORAGE:
Always ensure that Ambien and other prescription medications are kept out of the reach of children. A proper storage location is at room temperature and away from sunlight and moisture.
